Description: Writing and being a teaching artist can both be solitary professions, as much of the work of creating, planning and leading classrooms is often done alone. How can writers find their people and build a writing community that will motivate and support their writing practices? In this panel, teaching writers will share their strategies for finding or creating writing communities, including generative writing communities such as writing groups and beta readers, mentorships and fellowships, and fundraising and career support.
Statement of Value: The discussion will generate strategies for building networks that will support writers throughout their careers. After an MFA program – or as an emerging writer – how do you find your people and build a writing community that can motivate and support you in your writing practice. Finding fundraising support: applying for grants, WITS/teaching gigs. Generative writing community: writing groups; writing allies, mentorships/fellowships. Volunteer community. Expanding community beyond MFA programs.
